5 Breeds of Dogs That Get Along With Cats

A lot of people assume that cats and dogs are sworn enemies. This has a lot to do with how the media portrays cats and dogs together on television and in movies. So, if you already have a cat and want a dog too, is it a good idea? The fact is, cats and dogs can actually co-exist and enjoy each others company! The following are five breeds of dogs that are most compatible living with a cat.

1. Labrador Retriever

Also known as "labs", this breed of dog is energetic, outgoing, & super affectionate! They will willingly accept your cat as their own. In addition, they are not innately jealous and are more willing to share their space with your cat. Of course, your cat should also be somewhat good-natured and willing to share his space with your dog. This gentle breed will not only be a great companion of your cat, but also the perfect addition to couples with children!

2. Golden Retriever

Golden retrievers are well-known for also being a good-natured, gentle breed. They are quick to adapt, making it easier for them to become friends with your cat and accept them as their own. However, they are also very playful dogs, so they may find it fun to chase other animals around. Therefore, you may initially need to train your dog not to have a habit of chasing your cat around the house. Golden retrievers are also obedient dogs, so they are easily trainable, making this breed a perfect addition to any family.

3. Basset Hound

This breed of dog like to hunt in packs and they tend to move slowly since their legs are shorter than their bodies. Because of their slow movement, your cat may feel less intimidated by them and more likely to get along with them. Basset hounds are generally easy-going and kind towards other animals. However, this breed of dog may be a bit stubborn when it comes to training, so it may take a it more time and patience on your part.

4. Poodles

These adorable, fluffy dogs are available in three different sizes - from teacup to standard sizes - but regardless of their size, this breed of dog is quite compatible with cats. They are smart and easy to train. The two smaller sized poodles not only look adorable, but because their size is relatively similar to the size of a cat, they may appear less intimidating and easier for cats to form a close friendship with. Poodles are also very protective, so they may take on a motherly figure and protect your cat if they sense danger.

5. Maltese

Maltese dogs are also well-known for their good-natured and affectionate personality. They aren't very large in size compared to a cat, so your kitten may not feel as intimidated. Maltese dogs are also very mellow and love to just lounge around the house, so you don't need to worry about them chasing after your cat. However, Maltese dogs tend to have long fur, so your cat may like to play with their fur. If you notice this happening, you will need to train your cat not to toy too much with your dog's fur.

We hope this list helps gives you somewhat of an idea of what breeds of dogs you can look into that would get along well with your cat.
